European Union residents may apply to have their qualifications equated with those of the UK. Other applicants need to apply for training at a UK School of Dental Hygiene.

Special conditions that may apply for hygienists that obtain employment:
Hygienists work to the prescriptions (treatment plan) of a dentist. Hygienists work without supervision except when administrating inferior block analgesia.

None required for EU nationals. The British Embassy/Consulate in the country of residence.

Is a job offer required before a Work Permit/Visa is issued?
Yes.

Main local and/or official language(s):
English. It is necessary to be fluent in this language.

Are hygienists qualified overseas required to sit the country's national examination?
Yes. Training lasting a minimum of 6 months is required before sitting the National Examination.

Information on the local working environment:
Hygienists can work in all sectors. Most hygienists work in both national health services and private dental practices.

Standard tasks that hygienists are allowed to undertake in the country:
  • Removal of supra and sub gingival deposits
  • Application of fluorides and fissure sealants
  • Administration of local infiltration analgesia and ID block analgesia
  • Domiciliary visits
  • Oral health education
  • take radiographs
  • take impressions for diagnostic, record & orthodontic model production
  • place temporary dressings
  • re-place dislodged crowns with a temporary cement
