President's Report to the House of Delegates

Fall 2014

É Sempre A Sorrir

Dear Colleagues:

Executive Council Face-to-face meeting

The EC met for our annual face-to-face meeting October 20-21, 2014 at our Central Office in Rockville, Maryland USA. Peter introduced us to the staff and provided a tour of the facilities.

During the meeting we reviewed the budget to date noting a modest profit of $2,554. An updated budget for 2015 was presented, including projected membership income, costs and expenses for sponsored programs and web advertising. In addition, a projected budget for 2016 was discussed.

Peter Anas explained the new internal New Member tracking form, which was developed for use with a new HOD member application. The EC agreed to charge a one-time fee of $150 for new HOD applications and to eliminate the 3-year discounted individual fee and for HOD as of 2015 and thereafter invoices. A new formula for calculating membership fees is being investigated.

Our eNews and Facebook page continue to receive very positive reviews. Our Facebook page has a 95% effectiveness rating as compared to others around the globe. Our thanks were expressed to Maria Goldie for managing the Facebook page and serving as Editor of the eNews.

IFDH has agreed to be an intellectual sponsor of the 2015 Global Oral Cancer Forum in New York.

The EC met with our attorney to discuss the registration/incorporation process. Paperwork has been filed for incorporation and approval was recently granted. To continue the process, our attorney has been working in concert with the Infrastructure Committee to modify the bylaws so that they will be acceptable according to Maryland law. The bylaws revisions are needed to apply for non-profit tax exempt status, and will be presented to the HOD once finalized.

The EC considered the membership application of Nigeria. A constitution was not provided as part of the application process, so the membership committee is attempting to determine whether one exists for this country.

The EC met with Professor Raman Bedi of the Global Child Dental Fund. The Social Responsibility Award applications are being reviewed by the committee and finalists should be determined shortly. In addition, the EC discussed partnering with the GCD Fund on an Essay Contest and a Mother's Promotion project. Once the details of these two projects are defined, we will share the news with the HOD.

The EC is pleased to announce that the project "Every Child has a Toothbrush" has begun. Applications will soon be available on the website and funds will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. We hope to continue gaining corporate support for this initiative.

The EC agreed to form a Social Responsibility Ad Hoc Committee to assist with managing the projects created with the GCD Fund and the Every Child has a Toothbrush. Delegates wishing to serve on this ad hoc committee should contact JoAnn immediately.

Further, the EC recognized the considerable work performed by Peter Anas on behalf of the association and agreed to change his title to Executive Director.

3rd North American/Global Dental Hygiene Research Conference

JoAnn and Robyn attended this meeting held in Bethesda, Maryland from October 16-19, 2014. JoAnn served as one of the keynote speakers addressing the topic "Advancing the Profession." The participants received flash drives with key documents from the meeting including a Researcher's Toolkit and an Educators' Guide created by the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research & Practice. Both documents are available on the Research Page of our website.

ADEA 5th Annual Women's Leadership Conference

JoAnn represented the IFDH at the American Dental Education Association's 5th Annual Women Leadership Conference and gave a presentation on Inter-professional Education and Practice. The meeting was held in Barcelona, Spain, September 14-16, 2014.

ISDH Planning Meeting

JoAnn and Maria were invited guests of the Swiss Dental Hygienists and attended their annual meeting on November 14-15, 2014. In addition, we met with the Organizing Committee to discuss plans for the 2016 ISDH. We were able to view the Congress Centre (messe), tour the city of Basel, and participate in the planning process. It is clear that the venue will be appropriate for the ISDH, as are the current plans. The HOD will meet in Lucerne prior to the ISDH meeting. Maria and I appreciated the chance to meet in person with the Organizing Committee and are confident that the ISDH will be well received by those who attend.

Holiday Season
As the holidays are approaching, it is my hope that you will enjoy the beauty of the season with good health and happiness.

Respectfully submitted,

Respectfully,

JoAnn
