President's Report to the House of Delegates

Summer 2014

É Sempre A Sorrir

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to report the following information concerning activities of the Executive Council (EC) and staff over this past quarter.

Membership Ballot Results

The following are the election results concerning the approval of new membership applications from Malta and the Czech Republic. Of 49 eligible votes, we received 34 votes as of the August 1st deadline; 35 in support of Malta and 33 in support of Czech Republic with 1 abstention. Therefore, we can now welcome both countries as HOD members of the IFDH! Our thanks to the Membership Committee for their review of the membership applications.

ISDH Meeting Dates

We have recently become aware that our planned June dates for the 2016 ISDH meeting overlaps with the 2016 International Association of Dental Research (IADR) meeting in South Korea. We have received requests from our dental hygiene research colleagues, corporate sponsors, and the IADR to consider changing the dates of our meeting. We met with the Swiss organizing committee and they are going to investigate alternative dates for our meeting. Since many individuals in Switzerland are on holiday, we will not have a resolution until the end of August. Stay tuned for an update on the symposium meeting dates!

eNews

Thank you to Managing Director Peter Anas for spearheading the new form of member communications, along with Editor Maria Goldie. This communication vehicle provides information to you much quicker, along with links to articles and events. Response from corporate sponsors and members has been extremely positive! Remember to submit news and information by September 1st for our Fall issue.

EC Face-to-Face Meeting

As per our bylaws, the Executive Council (EC) must meet in person on a yearly basis. As such we have decided to hold our face-to-face meeting immediately following the 3rd North American/Global Dental Hygiene Research Conference in Bethesda, Maryland. Plans are in process for the EC to meet on October 20-21, 2014.

Research Conference

The 3rd North American/Global Dental Hygiene Research Conference will be held from October 16-19, 2014 at the Doubletree Hotel in Bethesda, Maryland. The theme of the conference is "Beyond the Boundaries: Discovery, Innovation and Transformation." We encourage you to attend this meeting which presents the latest information on dental hygiene science. To register for this meeting, contact Dr. Jane Forrest at jforrest@usc.edu or Dr. Ann Spolarich at AnnEshSpo@aol.com. In a recent conversation with Dr. Spolarich, she indicated that if you register by August 15th, she will extend to you the early bird registration fee.

Membership Dues

All member country associations and current and past individual members were sent invoices for membership dues from our Central Office. Thank you to the 22 countries and 53 individuals who have paid their 2014, 2015, and/or 2016 dues to date! Please encourage your associations and colleagues to be current with dues payments.

Financial Matters

We have been looking into ways of investing some of our funds to generate an additional source of revenue. It has been difficult at this stage, since we are not yet registered/incorporated in the U.S. Since our office moved to the U.S., our liability insurance from Australia for the EC was not effective. Therefore, Peter did a company search and a new policy with similar coverage, but at less cost, was finalized in June. In addition, all but one of our corporate sponsors have paid their 2013 and 2014 invoices.

Sponsorship Prospectus and Marketing

I am pleased to report that P&G has generously offered to sponsor our new program "Toothbrush for Every Child Program" with funds to be used for small grants for the program and $5000 in toothbrushes. Premier has also offered a small grant for this program. We are in the process of developing the protocols and hope to launch this program within the near future. Stay tuned to the website for more details and let’s work together to make sure that every child has a toothbrush and knows how to use it!

GCD Fund Update

Our partnership with the Global Children Dental Fund continues to grow. We have extended the application for the Social Responsibility Award to September 30, 2014. Please encourage your colleagues to apply for this wonderful opportunity to serve children in need. Also, Professor Bedi, from the GCD Fund, will join us at our face-to-face meeting in October to discuss our joint ventures.

Travel and Meeting Attendance

The EC has been active promoting the IFDH in a variety of ways.

  • Our Treasurer, Mary Rose, presented a hands-on course on periodontal instrumentation at the Dental Hygiene Day at the 9th CAD/CAM & Digital Dentistry International Conference in Dubai in May. Her course was so popular it was extended to two days!
  • On June 17th and 18th Robyn attended the International Conference on Curriculum in Dental Hygiene conference on Curriculum at University Gadja Mada in Jogyakarta, Indonesia representing the IFDH and discussing dental hygiene education and curricular issues.
  • Corrie and Yvonne Nyblom are working together to achieve automatic recognition and acknowledgement of the dental hygienist in the European legislation and have met with the European Commission in Brussels to begin this process.
  • Furthermore, I was recognized as a guest at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session in June, and just gave a presentation July 30th on "Devices to Detect Oral Cancer" and "About the IFDH" for a group of dental hygienists from Italy at the University of Buffalo.
  • Lastly, I was interviewed for WebMD on plaque control and will share the link for this interview once it is published.

Website

The staff is constantly updating the website with current information, new programs and a new Calendar of Events. Thank you to the majority of HOD members for sending in their photos for use next to their contact information. This makes our site more personal to our viewers. However, we noticed that some of the links and information on our Working Abroad web pages are out of date or no information exists as all. Please take time to update your links so we are current for those dental hygienists hoping to work in your wonderful countries. Please provide Peter with your current information by Friday, August 15th.

As you can see, we remain very active and look forward to continuing to support the profession of dental hygiene worldwide. Please feel free to contact us at any time with your ideas.

Respectfully,

JoAnn
