President's Report to the House of Delegates

Summer 2015

É Sempre A Sorrir

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to report the following information concerning activities of the Board and staff over this past quarter.

New Member
The Membership Committee reviewed the application from Nigeria and recommended approval as a country member. The Board voted to approve this country and Nigeria was notified accordingly. The IFDH currently represents 29 member countries and 82,000 dental hygienists!

eNews
The eNewsletter for June has been completed and is posted on the website. This vehicle continues to be a very positive way to report information about the IFDH and member countries. We do want to report on your activities so remember to submit news and information by September 1st for our Fall issue.

Board Face-to-Face Meeting
As per our bylaws, the Board (formerly Executive Council) must meet in person on a yearly basis. As such we held our meeting on June 1-2, 2015 in London just before the Europerio 8 meeting. During this meeting we met with numerous representatives of corporate sponsors, worked on planning for the ISDH and HOD meetings, reviewed the 2015 budget, reviewed committee reports, and met with Professor Raman Bedi to discuss the Global Dental Child Fund Social Responsibility 2015 Awards. Please visit www.ifdh.org for more information about this award and promote this award opportunity within your country association. Applications are due by September 30th.

Membership Dues
All member country associations and current and past individual members were sent invoices for membership dues from our Central Office. Thank you to the 25 countries who have paid their 2015 dues to date! If you have not paid your dues, you will be receiving a notice from the Treasurer. Timely payment is necessary to remain a country member. Please encourage your associations and colleagues to be current with dues payments.

Registration and Incorporation Update
We have completed the registration process and filed the necessary paperwork for incorporation as a non-profit entity in the state of Maryland, USA. It is anticipated that approval can take between 3-9 months. As soon as we receive approval, we will send you notification.

Every Child has a Toothbrush Program
This program, generously sponsored by Proctor and Gamble and Premier, has begun and several grants have been awarded. We encourage you to visit www.ifdh.org and submit your application to help children learn how to use a toothbrush to prevent oral diseases.

NEW Social Responsibility Program
The Board has recognized that the IFDH needs to assume responsibility for improving the health of the public and has chosen to focus on improving the oral health of children. In addition to the Every Child has a Toothbrush Program, we have created a Social Responsibility focus that will encompass several programs. We will begin with a half-day workshop on social responsibility during our HOD meeting next June in Switzerland. At that time we will engage the expertise of individuals in community interventions and health literacy to guide us in becoming more aware of how to effect change. In 2017, we will host a conference designed to work with experts to create intervention programs tailored to our respective countries. We will implement those programs and report the outcomes at our 2019 ISDH. Funding is being sought for these social responsibility programs with the assistance of Henry Schein.

National Children's Oral Health Foundation
The IFDH has partnered with the National Children's Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) a non-profit organization designed to provide an aggressive response to eliminate children's preventable suffering from pediatric dental disease. The organization has many preventive programs including Back to School with America's ToothFairy, the Smile Drive, and the Esther Wilkins Education Program. Programs are available in the US and Canada, and plans are underway to expand them internationally. More information about the NCOHF can be found on our website and at www.ncohf.org.

Website Update
The staff is constantly updating the website with current information, new programs and Calendar of Events.

New Program: Your Guide to Oral Health
The members of the Professional & Public Relations Committee has recommended that we expand the website to include a section for the public pertaining to patient education topics. We are going to create a section entitled "Your Guide to Oral Health" designed to help the public understand how to care for their mouth. Topics being explored include: how to care for your mouth at home, caries, gingivitis/periodontitis, mouth cancer, xerostomia, tobacco cessation, implant maintenance, elder care, diet, how to choose a toothpaste, denture care, teeth whitening, caring for your mouth while undergoing cancer treatment, managing bad breath, and website resources. Each topic will be developed by dental hygiene experts, and will be translated into a variety of languages in print version. We will be seeking corporate sponsorship to develop this component of the website.

As you can see, we remain very active and look forward to continuing to support the profession of dental hygiene and the education of the public worldwide. Please feel free to contact us at any time with your ideas.

Respectfully,

JoAnn
