IFDH Congratulates its Member
Swedish Dental Hygienist Association
On their 50th Anniversary

IFDH Promoted Worldwide
IFDH-President Elect Corrie Jongbloed 2019

The Swedish Dental Hygienists Association (STF) celebrated its 50th anniversary in Stockholm from in April. The program started with an introduction from Yvonne Nyblom, RDH, (top photo, right), President Swedish Dental Hygienist Association, followed by scholarships and a two-day scientific program. A wonderful dinner took place in the Stockholm Town Hall (known form the Nobel Peace awards) (bottom photo) with over 1000 participants.

IFDH President-Elect Corrie Jongbloed (top photo, left), congratulated the Swedish Association on behalf of the IFDH and emphazised the STF being one of the oldest dental hygienists associations in Europe and being a role model for many countries - nowhere in the world is the ratio dental hygienists - dentists as good as in Sweden and as a result, the status of oral health in Sweden probably the best in the world. In addition, Nyblom has been a pioneer for the dental hygienists' profession in Europe and the STF is the leader of the European Erasmus Plus Projects promoting oral health and the role of dental hygiensts in preventive oral health care all over Europe. IFDH whishes the STF the best of luck in the upcoming 50 years, for the organization as well as its individual members and as a small token of appreciation offers a plaque for the association's and president's offices.

American & European Dental Education Meet in Italy

American & European Dental Education Meet in Italy

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) met in Brescia, Italy in April. After a ACFF (Alliance for a Cavity free future) pre-meeting workshop about Caries Education and Practice, welcome remarks from Prof. Corrado Paganelli, Dean University of Bescia (host school), Dr. Henri Gremillion, ADEA Chair of board and Prof. Stéphanie Tubart Jeannin, ADEE President. Keynote Speaker Dr. Benoit Varenne of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Oral Health program. Dr. Varenne addressed the burden of oral disease being "a serious burden with growing threat of co and multi morbity, illustrated by the number of untreated tooth decay (3 billion), more than migraine, diabetes, severe periodontitis and asthma". He also stated that oral health has NOT improved during the last 25 years and that the belief that the prevalence of oral disease has been reduced, needs to be reviewed. The program continued with workshops on e.g. global networking and interprofessional education and with more education related topics like assessments. IFDH was represented by President elect Corrie Jongbloed, who met with Dr. Varenne and the President of the Council of European Dentists, Dr. Marco Landi. On Friday evening ‘a celebration of Italian culture' took place at Castello Malvezzi, Brescia!

A Revamped Volunteer Program with
New Involvement from Curasept

Every Child has a Toothbrush
promote this to your members

For those inspired to improve the oral health of children, the IFDH "Every Child has a Toothbrush" campaign was designed to teach children how to use a toothbrush effectively so they can better control biofilm and reduce the risk of tooth decay. Our new, remodeled program does not vary from this direction. IFDH has worked with Curasept to fine-tune the details, to promote this program globally, and to make it easier for Hygienists to participate. The program makes it possible for hygienists from around the world to get involved. Toothbrushes and other materials and modest grants will be given to assist them in their project. For information as to how to participate please click here.

National Dental Hygienists Week

The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) celebrated another phenomenal National Dental Hygienists Week April 6 - 12 with recognition from the Prime Minister of Canada, the Federal Minister of Health, and a proclamation in the House of Commons. We raised awareness across North America of the importance of oral health and the role of dental hygienists as primary health care providers while collaborating with the American Dental Hygienists' Association to have 21 landmarks lit in purple during the week. The Tornado Tower in Qatar (home of the Canadian Embassy) was also lit in purple! CDHA received 791 #dhpurplepride-themed contest photos, more than 1,200 coloring contest entries, an overwhelming number of social media posts, website downloads, and media coverage. The week could not have been a bigger success! See our photo gallery highlights with amazing events from coast to coast.

In a project between the National Danish Health Authority focusing on dysphagia and malnutrition, five municipalities and Dental Hygienists, Occupational Therapists and Diet & Nutrition professionals will work together to help mainly elderly citizens suffering from dysphagia and malnutrition. This new focus on reasons for suffering from dysphagia and malnutrition linking potential oral diseases, lack of muscular capacities or incorrect levels of nutrition in the diet will potentially bring new information on the cross influence of the work areas of the professionals in this project.

Donna Paton

April 3rd was the launch day of the long awaited National Oral Health Policy for Ireland. 'Smile agus Slainte' (Smile and Health) was in development since 2014 with a three-year timeline, however it has taken until 2019 to publish. IDHA president Donna Paton attended the launch of the policy at the Dublin Dental University and Hospital. Smile agus Slainte refers to Independent practice for the Dental Hygienist and acknowledges the Importance of the expansion of the scope of practice, however these changes can only happen with a change to the current Dental Act. The IDHA continues to work at government level to seek the change as soon as possible.

The IDHA have also promoted European Gum Health Day on May 12th through various platforms on social media.

As hosts for the ISDH in 2022, we are busy preparing for the closing ceremony in Brisbane where we will introduce you to ISDH Dublin 2022! We invite you to visit our stand in the exhibitor's area to say 'Céad Míle Fáilte'
